Eva:

I will miss your gentle heart, your gentle hand, your many loving ways. Your were so special in every way.

You lived each day with joy in your heart and knew life was a gift. You sought the answer in troubled times and helped me do the same. We laughed and cried to southe our souls and danced the night away.

And most of all for the times we shared, thank you for being my friend.

(I told Melody I would post this message. She wrote this out on a beautiful piece of parchment and gave it to me at Mom's celebration. JMD)

Oh Eva Ann, what joy you brought to the workday. I remember you dashing into my office after tackling a problem and declaring, "Happy is the man who's found the cause of a thing!" Or when someone caused a problem you'd tell me, "Let's not play Who Shot John." In other words solve the problm without blaming someone. Your sayings were famous in our house--Shannon and Marco still use them. Their favorites were about trying to "pick the fly shit from the pepper" and "leave it lay where Jesus flang it." Your legacy will be long and beautiful, leaving a trail of grateful people. Thank you!!!

My first day at ABC-CLIO was the company picnic. I knew no one of course and the one person who stood up when I arrived and invited me to sit with her was no other than Miss Eva Deacon. A huge act of kindness I have never forgotten. I worked with her for many years. Shared many lunches with her. Went on a cruise with her and others from work. Her driving scared the hell out of me. I remember her crying at her desk each year on her mother's birthday and the anniversary of her passing. She loved her mother so much. I remember her love of birds. Her "Evaism"s" - "Doesn't matter how the donkey got in the ditch - just get him out!!" I wish I had written them all down. I was inspired and amazed at Eva's love of life. The deep love and pride she had in her family. The stories of her life she shared with us. I will miss you Eva. You were truly an amazing woman.

I will miss seeing your smiles at Grace on Saturday nights Eva. You always made me feel so welcome - even with my kids. No matter how bad I felt, I could always count on getting a hug and smile from you. Thank you for making me feel welcome each and every time I saw you - since 2002.

My memories of Eva are mostly from ABC Christmas parties over the years. I so enjoyed and appreciated her warmth, enthusiasm and joy of being. One of the treasured, fun moments I shared with her was in the ladies room at one of the parties. We were touching up our makeup and I asked if she would like to try some of my "sparkle". She beamed "Yes!", then proceeded to apply the "sparkle" all over her cheeks and eyelids, and happily "glowed" back to the dance floor. She truly was young at heart. How lucky to have such a lovely, creative mother. We will miss her.
